Project Profile Logoplaste Portugal
Project Profile Logoplaste Innovation Lab
Project Profile Logoplaste Consultores Técnicos
The SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS project, supported under the PRR and led by the Innovation Laboratory of Logoplaste, with the close partnership of APIP – Portuguese Association of the Plastics Industry, intends to mobilize the private sector supported by national authorities, universities, and citizens for the objectives of the European circular economy, thereby aiming for the reducing of the greenhouse gas emissions, increase resources efficiency and job creation.
In that sense, this project has the following goals (G):
- G1: Increase the circularity and efficiency of plastic resources in the framework of the European plastics strategy, launched by the European Commission, towards an increasingly circular economy;
- G2: Design and develop materials with enhanced separation and recycling properties;
- G3: Design and develop products that encourage and promote reuse;
- G4: Design and produce plastics and plastic products aligned with reuse, repair and recycling needs;
- G5: Use plastic waste as a resource at the end of products' life, to close the cycle;
- G6: Developing replacement solutions that extend the life of plastic items;
- G7: Incorporate alternative raw materials in plastics production - raw materials that contain waste or by-products from other sectors and processes, such as bio-based raw material from the agricultural industry, carbon-based raw material from the chemical industry, and chemical and secondary plastics from the plastics industry;
- G8: Define life cycle assessment actions in order to identify the conditions under which the use of biodegradable or compostable plastics is beneficial and what the criteria are for these applications
SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS is structured in 7 Work Packages (WPs),
- WP1 to WP4 are focused:
- On research, development, and innovation with TRLs closer to the market
- Productive investment, which materializes the production of new goods and services by business investors
- WP5 will be dedicated to the qualification and internationalization of co-promoters;
- WP6 consists of an Active and Advanced Training Plan;
- WP7 will be dedicated to the project coordination, promotion, dissemination, and exploitation of results.
In WP3- Circularity by Recycling - is proposed the use case PPS9 CONNECTED SINGULARITY led by Logoplaste Innovation Lab, where it is intended the development of a packaging that incorporates connectivity and singularity solutions in order to increase the efficiency of recycling lines and increase the scope of use of plastic packaging.
The Consortium brings together 40 Companies and 11 non-Business Entities from the R&I System to cover all the segments and subsectors of the plastics industry and responding to the main challenges faced by the agents of this new extended value chain.
PPS9 CONNECTED SINGULARITY
Challenges and Objectives
In the 1st phase of the project, it will be created a system containing digital “water marks”, that will act as a digital passport with the main goal of recyclability. This system is intended to contain information on the characteristics of the products, packaging and materials used, making it possible to increase the accuracy of sorting streams and, consequently, turning the recycling processes more efficient and therefore increase the volume of recycled material, benefiting the entire packaging value chain.
In a 2nd phase of the project, we aim to explore the Singularity concept, where a unique code will be applied to each finish product, where this singularity could be used to acquire information both on the upstream processes during the manufacture of packaging components, and later along the supply chain.
To this end, the entire digital ecosystem will be developed, where data will be collected and processed, from the packaging production circuit, including the phases that goes from filling to logistics and finally to the packaging disposal and waste management.
Resulting Products and Services
- Bottle with unique/singular characteristics;
- Digital watermarking with laser technology;
- Innovative packaged beverages with improved interactivity with consumers and supply chain stakeholders.
