Novo Verde launched its 2022 edition of the Novo Verde Packaging Enterprise Award, a research and development award that recognizes the packaging industry in Portugal.

This award promotes the best R&D ideas and solutions as well as contributions to the circular plastics economy in the packaging sector. The goal is to implement viable, innovative projects with added value, and increase knowledge sharing, to promote and expand the circular plastics economy.

Logoplaste Innovation Lab is a top 5 finalist with the Connected Dairy Bottle


The Connected Dairy Bottle is a label-free bottle for liquid yogurt or milk that incorporates recycled material and can be fully integrated into dedicated recycling streams. The design includes embedded codes that indicate the type of plastic used in the bottles.

These codes are recognized through optical reading systems—a basic smart phone or an optical sorting system at a Material Recycling Facilities (MRF). A quick scan reveals material details, including dyes and grade, so that sorting systems can guide the packaging into the correct recycling stream.

Currently, white PET bottles are discarded in landfills because they are difficult to properly recycle. This is due to their opaque color and the need to sort white PET food-grade packaging from non-food packaging.

With embedded codes, the packaging can tell recyclers everything they need to know, opening the door to a Recycled Food Grade Material circuit for this type of plastic bottles. For the first time, the Dairy industry has a truly sustainable, and circular, solution for recycling packaging.


Finalists will present their packaging and the winner will be selected on June 6th.
